The goal of the meeting is to provide advanced knowledge and understanding, to give inspiration through basic science and clinical leadership, and to provide serious mentorship for all attendees.

H. Gilbert Welch, MD, MPH
A raucous romp through the misplaced enthusiasm for screening liquid biopsies — a single blood test that screens for multiple cancers at once. Mandating Medicare coverage for these unproven, expensive tests somehow produces bipartisanship in Congress (that’s rare) – and proponents assert that multi-cancer screening will somehow address health disparities (that’s rich). The science is thin, yet the financial community is ecstatic: “Liquid Biopsy: Early Detection of a Huge Investment Opportunity”, touts one headline.
About the presenter: Dr. Welch is a general internist who has worked for the US Indian Health Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Dartmouth. Currently, he is a Senior Researcher at the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. For over three decades, he has been asking hard questions about his profession. His arguments are frequently counter-intuitive, even heretical, yet have regularly appeared in the country's most prestigious medical journals — Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute — as well as in op-eds in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. His most recent book is LESS MEDICINE, MORE HEALTH – 7 Assumptions that Drive Too Much Medical Care.

Innovative dental procedures – combining regenerative periodontal therapy with orthodontic treatment – enable the dentist to minimize potential iatrogenic risk factors associated with orthodontic therapy. Focusing on favorably positioned teeth and an enhanced muco-gingival complex, facilitate ideal and predictable esthetics and function and minimizes the risk of iatrogenic gingival recession associated with orthodontic treatment. The goal is orthodontic stability and ideal tooth alignment with less need for orthognathic treatment or extractions and less apical root resorption, along with accelerated orthodontic treatment. We will discuss the background and concepts of POPA, its limitations as well as the complications of orthodontic treatment and the logistics of executing a multi-disciplinary treatment. Representative clinical cases and evidence will be presented.

Michael Glick, DMD
During our training as dental students we rely on our clinical faculty to guide us. We trust their clinical judgement and do not question their technical skills nor their theoretical knowledge. However, after entering private practice we must access and use new and pertinent clinical guidelines from other sources. These sources could be lectures delivered at continuing education courses or our own analysis of the literature. This presentation will highlight how guidelines can be appraised and why many published guidelines may unfortunately sometimes create more controversies than help.
Critical thinking is a subject matter that has been discussed by philosophers and scientists for thousands of years. Many definitions have been proposed to describe this concept, which ultimately is a process of recognizing how and why we believe what we see, hear, and read. Included in a critical thinking process is being cognizant of different sides of an argument, and being able to apply an analytical, logical, and systematic approach to new and old ideas, all while being both inquisitive and curious. In this presentation, principles of critical thinking will be discussed with the goal of incorporating such reasoning into clinical care to benefit our patients and ultimately improve health in our own communities and beyond.
About the presenter: Michael Glick is Professor and Executive Director, Center for Integrative Global Oral Health, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Glick has authored more than 350 publications, including original research articles, editorials, and book chapters, and has written, edited, and co-edited 10 textbooks. Among these several editions of the seminal text in oral medicine – Burket’s Oral Medicine.
Dr. Glick is the immediate past Dean, School of Dental Medicine, University at Buffalo, past-President of the American Board of Oral Medicine, served as Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of the American Dental Association from 2005 to 2020, and chaired FDI/World Dental Federation’s Vision 2020 and co-chaired FDI’s Vision 2030.
Rory Hume, DDS, PhD
The science of caries has advanced substantially since the time of Miller and Black, but much of our preventive and restorative behavior has not. By failing to advance clinical practice to match the strength of the science we fail both our patients and ourselves. This presentation will address the key areas where we can do much better than we now do.
Dentistry emerged from apprenticeship and proprietary schools into the world of research universities in the 1920s and 30s due to Gies, mirroring Flexner's leadership in medicine. Great good came from that change. We are now at grave risk of abandoning that advance by sliding back into the world of profit-seeking, 'research university in name only proprietary schools.
About the presenter: Rory Hume was born in Australia, where he completed his dental training and a Ph.D. in physiology and pharmacology. After government service as a dentist in rural Australia, he came to UCLA as a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Medicine and was then hired by the UCLA School of Dentistry. He later served as Dean of Dentistry at the University of Sydney; as Chair of Restorative Dentistry at UCSF; and as Dean of Dentistry at UCLA. Through those years he was an active clinician and researcher and taught cariology, pulp biology, endodontics, and pharmacology. He then moved to full-time university-wide administration for fifteen years as a university provost and president. After retirement, he returned to dental education six years ago as Dean of Dentistry at the University of Utah.
Dick Tucker, DDS
Precision and attention to detail lead to success in achieving excellence in all areas of dentistry. This presentation will focus on cast gold restorations. The restoration of endodontically treated teeth will be covered, paying particular attention to the preservation of remaining coronal tooth structure. The use of orthodontic extrusion to save severely compromised teeth will also be presented as an adjunct to treating otherwise hopeless teeth.
About the presenter: Dick Tucker graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 1976, and has maintained a private dental practice in Bellingham Washington for the past forty years. He mentors three clinical study clubs in gold restorations monthly. Dick has lectured in Mexico, Canada, the United States, and Europe. Other educational endeavors include teaching an elective course in cast gold restorations at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and teaching the Tucker Institute course in Cast Gold Restorations.
He is also an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, a member of The American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, and Past President of the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators. If he can’t be practicing dentistry, he enjoys fishing, sailing, and mountain climbing, having climbed six peaks over 18,000 feet.
John Khademi, DDS, MS
About the presenter Dr. Khademi received his DDS from the University of California San Francisco and his certificate in endodontics and did his MS on digital imaging from the University of Iowa. He is in full time private practice in Durango Colorado and was Associate Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Maxillofacial Imaging at USC and is Adjunct Assistant Professor at SLU. In his “prior life”, he wrote software for laboratory automation, instrument control and digital imaging. He lectures internationally about CBCT, clinical trial design, outcomes, and conventional endodontic technique. As a Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) member for over 20 years, his background in medical radiology allows him a perspective shared by very few dental professionals.

This presentation will aim to educate attendees about the current cybersecurity threat landscape, common vulnerabilities, attacks, and how to mitigate and recover from these in your dental practice.
About the Presenter: Born in So. Cal and grew up in Northern Nevada before moving to study at the Univ. of New Mexico. After realizing I should use my longtime hobby with computers as a career path I earned my Microsoft certifications and joined a local startup IT provider supporting dental and medical offices in 2004. I ventured out on my own in 2011 and currently provide service for General and Specialist Dental offices throughout New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
When not working or spending time with my wife and daughter I enjoy fly fishing, hiking, skiing, cycling and auto racing.
