"How to Review a Paper"

“Too Much Dentistry?”

Low-cost, low-dose CBCT has heralded a new era for dental imaging as big for us as CT was for medical imaging 30+ years ago. These advanced imaging studies are impressive in their ability to render anatomic detail in useful ways for treatment planning as well as demonstrate abnormalities.  Research and academic publications have established the ability of CBCT to detect smaller abnormalities as well as detect abnormalities earlier allowing the clinician to intervene earlier and more decisively. This is the prevailing model: earlier detection leading to earlier diagnosis leading to earlier staging leading to earlier and possibly less invasive intervention leading to better outcome. Can we detect abnormalities too early or too small? Should more sensitive imaging encourage earlier intervention, as is traditionally thought, or exactly the opposite?

CBCT has been described as a cipher into the roles of probability and cognitive bias in decision-making along with the associated confidence.

Attendees will learn:

  1. The roles of prior probability in posterior probability.

  2. To recognize common cognitive biases that can lead to systematic errors.

  3. How these issues can affect clinical decision-making and patient-outcomes.
